Description

Picpoul is almost exclusively grown in the Mediterranean area of France, mostly in the area of Languedoc-Roussillon. Picpoul de Pinet is considered the best Appellation for Picpoul, as the land is low lying with sandy soils, which allows this ancient variety to make the most of the climate. Picpoul like a lot of grape varieties in Europe suffered after the Phylloera outbreak, when the vineyards were replanted and modernised Picpoul was often left out because of its low yields and its susceptibility to mildew. However some producers still persevered and bucked the modern trend, thankfully for us.

Picpoul is seeing renewed international interest as wine drinkers look for new varieties to quench their thirst. The Name “Picpoul” translates into lip-stinger as the grape has very high levels of acidity, it manages to keep its high acidity in the very warm climate of the Mediterranean. This acidity makes Picpoul a great refreshing summer wine and also a wine that works with a wide variety of foods. This wine is great, I love it. The nose is very light, you really have to tease out the aromas, but what I found was elderflower, lime and jasmine with a greenish smell. The palate is dry and salty, with a crackling acidity that all Picpoul has, lime juice, mineral water and salt dominate. This wine works well will fish and chips, halloumi and feta, I drank it with a grilled Mediterranean vegetable salad with an oily vinaigrette dressing.
