Description

The Loire valley in North West of France produces an astounding amount of bubbles made from the wide array of grapes grown in the Loire valley, with the sensible exception of Sauvignon Blanc whose characters have proven unattractive in sparkling wines. The Loire Valley is a huge appellation and producers the 3rd most wine in France after Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley. The local Parisian market has been wise on the wines from the Loire for decades but outside of France the Loire – not including Pouilly-Fumé or Sancerre – is still relatively underrated, I particularly like dry whites from the Loire which are light, crisp and delicious.

This wine is made from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Chenin Blanc is very high in acidity with characters of green apples, apple skins, lemon pith, white flowers, and wet cave, perfect for bubbly production. Chenin is an incredibly versatile grape it makes long-lived sweet wines, ageable dry whites and all styles of bubbly. Chenin Blanc is also used as a base for some fortified wines and spirits. Chenin is tough and crops heavily, the only problem is it buds early and ripens late which in the Loire sometimes presents a problem where it can fail to ripen fully or get frost damaged early in spring. If Chenin fails to fully ripen in the Loire,it goes into making sparkling wines allowing producers to still produce wines even if the vintage has been unforgiving.

This wine is crisp, dry and moreish. It is a perfect affordable end of week bubbles… I can’t get enough. Drink with fresh seafood or brie.
