Description

Laughing Jack vineyards have been owned by the Kalleske family in the Moppa sub-region of the Barossa Valley since 1855. Most of the vineyard is planted with dry grown old vine Shiraz, although there are also plantings of Grenache and Semillon. Shaun Kelleske is now the winemaker and he understands the vines intimately, it’s in his blood I suppose.

This wine is made in a fresh vibrant style with Shaun harvesting the low yield dry grown grapes, destemming and fermenting as whole berries. Once primary fermentation had finished the wine was then gravity fed into oak barrels 50/50 French and American, the skins were shovelled into a press then pressed with the resulting juice fed into the barrels with the un-pressed juice. It was then left to go through malo and matured in the oak for 20 months.

The resulting wine is all forest fruits and spice. It has a lovely deep crimson colour that suggest something more brooding and less fresh, but the palate is lively and super fresh. There is some nice supporting structure provided by the pressing and the oak and really allows this wine to punch above its weight. Drink with seared lamb, or even star anise roast duck. You could cellar it for 7 years if your so inclined.
