The Steins have a long history with Riesling dating back to 1838 when they first put their roots down in Australia. Jacob Stein is the current Stein caretaker of Robert Steins vineyard in Mudgee.

The vines for this Riesling were planted 40 years ago by Jacob’s Grandfather, he planted them on the highest part of the property, facing south-southwest. The Riesling is planted in a mixer of red iron stone, quartz, and slate, I don’t know why but the best Riesling is always planted in slate. Mudgee is a warm growing region producing fully ripe fruit, however with this fruit due to its southern aspect it ripens slowly retaining varietal character.

What’s amazing about this wine is it has only travelled a few hundred meters from grapes to wine, and that is the sign of a wine and a producer that truly expresses terroir.

Jacob is not only a winemaker, he is also a farmer growing and tending to his grapes as well as a host of animals, someone who has a deep connection to his vineyard and his wines shows through this wine. The clarity of this wine is what strikes me first, pure lime and citrus, there is some old oak influence on the mouthfeel which fleshes out the palate.

Drink it now or do as I’m going to, cellar for a good 15 years, this wine has the bones for age.
