This wine comes from the Southern Burgundy region of Mâcon. Here typically Chardonnays are unoaked and have a riper more peach driven flavour profile.

The originally Flemish Jean-Marie Guffens is the winemaker and grower of this wine and is making heads turn with his terroir expressive Chardonnays. Jean-Marie makes whites of incredible purity and are a far cry from some of the overtly oaky and sometimes funky whites of Burgundy. The Name “Terre de Pierre” mean ground of stones, as the vineyard where the grapes are grown in is a typical Maconnaise soil called argilo-calcaire which is sprinkled with stones, he named this wine after the vineyard and gives you a hint of the winemaker’s intention with the wine, to let the wine sing of its place.

Jean-Marie keeps yields incredibly low as his perfectionist nature insures he uses the best, and most expressive fruit. The grapes are hand harvested, then whole bunch pressed there is no crushing here as it may interfere with the purity of the fruit. Only the free run juice is then gravity fed into horizontal stainless-steel tanks, which have been designed to maximise the surface contact area with the lees and minimise oxygenation, it ferments under these temperature controlled conditions on its lees for 3 months.

The wine is an austere and mineral expression of Mâcon. There is no fat, cheese, or butter which some have come to expect from Burgundian style whites. Lemon, white peach, honey suckle, and lemon pith greet the nose, on the palate the same fruit purity is found. This wines true joy is its balance between austerity and expressiveness, the wine is tight and racy however has a broad, round mouthfeel from the extended lees contact. Cellar for up to 10 years, enjoy with barbequed chicken dishes or a strong brie.
